Welcome!

This is a blog about trying new things, tasting all the good things in life, and making every day an adventure.

Do things that make you happy. Try things that will make you better. Look to your friends for inspiration. Everyone has a talent or a special gift to offer. Sometimes just doing the smallest thing can provide a sense of accomplishment, enhance our wellbeing and increase our self-worth.

And if you feel uncomfortable...good! That means you're growing. See as many places as you can on this planet. Meet new people and try new things. There's so much I still want to do and try so you're invited to follow my adventures...the big and the bitty. We can enjoy them over Cocktails on Monday...or any day of the week.

Cheers!

Modern Calligraphy, of course!

Modern Calligraphy, of course!

I have always admired beautiful lettering. It can make a simple card, note or gift extra special. So for a long time I've wanted to take a Modern Calligraphy Course...and that's just what I did last weekend in London. My lovely friend and I went to the class together and we both loved it!

But before our calligraphy adventure started, we enjoyed a little journey through a food market. We had coffees, tried some yummy French pastries called canele's and shared a giant raspberry-filled donut hole. Yum! So with our sticky fingers (that we washed off before our class) we headed over to the Habitat store in Chelsea and to the beautiful open-space, sunny gallery inside the store called the Platform.

This bright and tastefully decorated room had swags of greenery and twinkle lights, white, clear & pink balloons, and an art installation on one wall with samples of calligraphy on envelopes and notes. Two long tables had fresh flowers and personalized place settings which included a clipboard, paper, a pen & nib, and black & neon pink ink wells at each seat. It was a lovely, creative, peaceful setting perfect for learning calligraphy!

Our instructor, Chiara Perano, introduced us to our writing tools, demonstrated how to hold our pens, created writing samples and offered us one-on-one support throughout the class. We had a little break for Afternoon Tea and enjoyed sandwiches, scones, pastries, tea, coffee and Prosecco (my favorite)! The lunch was set out beautifully and tasted as good as it looked. During the second part of the class we tried out our new calligraphy skills using neon pink ink. So much fun!

Chiara just published a book called "Nib and Ink" (available on Amazon) which we purchased and she signed for us after class. We were also able to take our paper, inks and pen with us so we could continue "calligrahy-ing" at home! And as a side note, I have been practicing and even used my modern calligraphy skills on a birthday gift for a friend. I found a cute picture frame with a heart-shaped opening and wrote a sweet quote in calligraphy for the space where the photo would go. It actually turned out quite well! Chiara's workshops are very popular and book up fast. If you're in the London area and would like to try one you can go to Lamplighter London Workshops and see what's coming up! You can also purchase her book online which has step-by-step instructions and lots of things to trace to get started. I also recommend this Calligraphy Set which includes all the tools you need to begin your own calligraphy adventure!

{After our Calligraphy Course we headed out on the town for, what else, cocktails! And then some dinner. We walked...& walked...& walked...(next time I'm taking the GPS reins) and finally found ourselves at Mr. Fogg's Tavern in Mayfair. It's a really cute (& really small) funky bar with personality-galore! Unfortunately our drinks weren't as big as this tavern's personality, but they were tasty! I had Gertrude's Gin Giddy and my lovely friend had a port & berry concoction. We toasted to our calligraphy-writing skills--which are much better than our map-reading skills--and "cheered" to a fun day learning and laughing! (And walking.) Enjoy!}
